All Hail The New Miss Teen Zimbabwe, Melisa Chimbodza

"I remember reading newspaper articles of other queens and thinking to myself 'wow, it must be nice', and now I smile to myself thinking of how far I have come in just a matter of 3 years......", she indeed has every reason to smile because that is none other than the newly-crowned Miss Teen Zimbabwe, Melisa Chimbodza speaking to Urban Craft magazine in the aftermath of clinching the title.

She outdid a strong list of contenders to claim the title but to the enviable 19 year old beauty, the feat only sunk in the following morning.
"It honestly only clicked in my mind that I had been crowed Miss Teen the following day, because my mind was still in disbelief and I felt like I was still waiting for the pageant to happen, but after it registered......the biggest feeling I felt was just being thankful.
"When the announcer called out my contestant number, I had a brief moment where I forgot what contestant number I was. Then when it finally clicked and I did my final walk, I had a sense of relief, like 'wow all my hard work had paid off' but I knew this was just the tip of the iceberg. When they eventually placed the crown on my head, all I can say is, it just felt right", said Melisa.
Though she concedes that the past couple of days have been nothing short of overwhelming, Melisa said that she barely had any time to wallow in the endless adulations and congratulatory messages given the fact that she will be representing her nation at the upcoming Miss Teen Continents peagent.
"The last couple of days have not only been filled with joy but with final planning and preparations for the Miss Teen Continents pageant which I'll be taking part in and representing Zimbabwe in Las Vegas, Nevada, America. This is also the same time period where we ( myself and 1st Princess Michelle Mabuza) plan what our year of reign will consist of", said Chimbodza.
"As the queen, my responsibilities are honestly endless and they consist of not only being a representative figure for teens but as well as playing an active part in fighting topical issues like Child Marriages. I'm there to speak about issues that the majority of today's teens face but can't really say or are simply brushed off", she added.
But where was this gem of a beauty unearthed and where did it all start?
"My modeling career began in form 4 when I won a school pageant which was Miss Interact Goromonzi and that win kind of gave me a slight boost in confidence and I thought to myself "Maybe this can go far" but I never thought this far lol.
"The other pageants that I took part in before Miss Teen I can't really compare because each pageant stood for something different and it also came in at a different stage in my life. For example I noticed that at every pageant I had the mentality that 'if I win this pageant, it will be the biggest achievement in my life and I'll rank it #1' until I took part in the next pageant and I'd have the same thoughts about that one, so what I'm basically saying is that each past pageant is on an equal leveled shelf", said Melisa.
Despite scooping the Miss Teen crown and having a whole host of other career highlights, the beauty remains humble but at the same time believes that this is only the beginning of bigger things to follow, and rightly so!
"Some of the highlights of my career include winning Dux Girl back in primary school at Whitestone, Victrix Ludorum 2012 at Midlands Christian College, Miss Interact Goromonzi and 2nd Princess Miss Harare Junior. Coupled with other achievements such as being able play a part in athletics, cross country, tennis, netball and hockey teams at the different schools I attended, I've had beautiful opportunities such as travelling to Israel as part of The Gateway High School divinity trip. I am only 19, so I'm sure greater things are bound to happen to me that will overshadow all my past and present achievements, that I strongly believe", she said.
Outside of modelling, Melisa is your 'typical' teen and she shared with us her pastimes (some of which include playing sports, reading, writing and performing poetry) and more importantly, her goals,

"I enjoy outdoor activities and I am always trying out something new with both friends and family. I have the same problems, issues and concerns that any other teenager has, which is something people tend to forget, that before the crown was on my head and after, I'm still the same as everyone else.
"My goals include successfully completing my International Hotel and Tourism Management studies at the International Management Institute of Switzerland. Once that has been achieved, I plan on working at a top ranking hotel or resort and work my way up to a top managerial position and in the long run I will, God willing, open my own hotel", she said.
