China-based writer, Deborah Nyasha Kabongo recently made her debut with what promises to be a captivating read.
Titled 'Scented Coffins' and officially launched on the 19th of August, the writer's first novel recounts the harrowing journey of one girl from her adolescence to womanhood and all that life throws at her.
"Born and raised in one of the most controversial countries in the world, a young girl sets out on her life journey wondering always what would have been better, to be born in Congo or Zimbabwe. Her experiences with love, dance and rape in Zimbabwe bring flash backs of the time her mind lived in Congo", said Kabongo.

The writer who also happens to be a dancer and part-time model took the time out to break down the title to the self published book itself.
"I titled it 'Scented Coffins' in the sense that most of us walk around spraying perfume on caskets as if we are not all walking dead. Social media has painted an image of perfectionism and the standards that we are setting for ourselves based on body goals, Bae goals, job goals have become unreasonably ridiculous. Noone is real anymore and we are all painting pictures to fit into this society", she said.

The Non fiction Novel which took her a little over 15 months to put together explores quite a wide variety of themes, chief among them being Love, Dance and Rape.
"Congo, my country of origin was labeled the 'rape country of the world'. Genocidal rape has been on a high increase in this country and I was moved to use my gift of words to talk about it. The book ventures through my journey with love and dance", said Deboh as she is affectionately known.

More than anything else, the writer said that her goal was to give women a voice and speak out against injustice and social ills that the average girl is subjected to while growing up.
"The idea is to impact at least one person because alone I can not save the world. As I quote my spoken word piece "Why I love Boko Haram", "they say there is comfort in numbers so would I find comfort if there were many girls kidnapped by Boko Haram. If I did manage to escape would I run back to a world where we would rather talk about Kim Kardashians' ass than find a cure for cancer or save the girl next door who has been told that her father rapes her because he loves her?"
"I speak out so that other young girls can speak out as well and I have been blessed enough to have a platform and a voice", said Kabongo.

Deboh said that she was open to direct contact for this book because she wanted to connect with people. So anyone who wants a copy (the book is free) can get in touch with her using the following;
