Jade Nickol Just Loves Being On Stage

Urban Craft magazine caught up with emerging Texas singer Jade Nickol, who, in a wide-ranging interview, spoke about her journey so far, upcoming music projects and most important of all - her aspirations.

Below are excerpts from our chat with the 18 year old singing sensation from Lake Dallas.
It seems that from a very young age, Jade was destined to be a star. Not only does she have a wonderful singing voice but she is also just as talented on the keys and on the guitar.
"I started performing at the age of 8 in school talent shows and small festivals. I sang to a track and pretty much just stood there. Even though I was in the beginnings and didn’t know much about music, I knew I loved the feeling of being on stage and singing. Since then, I have taken up 2 instruments, Piano and Guitar, and began to song write.
"I gig all around DFW on the weekends and earn a steady income doing so. I have gotten to meet so many amazing musicians and people by scouting out open mics to perform at and network. The Dallas music scene is such a sweet community and everybody I have met so far supports as much as they can", said Nickol.

Winning the Lake Cities Idol was quite the accomplishment for a young Jade and she looks upon this feat as one of the moments that was key in her progression as an artist.
"When I was 10 years old, I won the Lake Cities Idol. I sang a Taylor Swift song and left it all on the stage. I won $1000 dollars and got to be in my town’s newspaper. Winning the idol showed my parents that I could actually do this and I could have a career in this", said the singer.

She also recounted how she got to fall in love with playing the piano and the guitar - and how these two instruments helped her identify a sound that was suitable for her.
"One turning point for me was when I started teaching myself how to play piano. I found it very difficult to write songs without an instrument so one day I decided to dust off the old Casio that we had and start. It wasn’t a full sized piano nor did it have weighted keys but I was determined to learn as much as I could on it. After a year of learning, I began to write songs. I was so amazed that this little piano could help me write what was inside my heart. Since that, I got with a piano teacher who began to teach me theory and stylization.
"The second turning point for me was when I picked up guitar and taught myself last year. After 3 years of only writing on piano, I started to write songs on guitar. I practiced day and night when I could and after some time, I started performing with the guitar more than piano. Guitar helped me figure out what kind of music I wanted to write and what genre I leaned towards", she said.

Having come all this way, the 18 year old said that she was excited by the journey so far and could not wait to see where it takes her to next. Her dream is to of course continue building her brand and exploring other music territories outside Texas.
"My career so far has consisted of getting my music recorded and finding gigs that pay. I have been gigging since I was 16 along with furthering my music as much as possible. Many teenagers my age couldn’t understand why I only worked on the weekends or why I wouldn’t get a “real job” but what they don’t know is that I’m building a career for myself.
"It’s been a very heartbreaking and fun journey so far and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next. I just recently had my first band gig in April and greatly enjoyed it. Doing more band gigs is what I’m aiming for now.
"My goal is to go as far with music as I can. I wanna go outside Texas and explore all the other music hubs in the world. Meet new musicians and hear their stories. I want to be remembered for my music and know that it connected people. A lifetime achievement goal of mine would be to become very successful and then create my own record label. I would love to help young artists like me figure out what they want and do it. It is a very big dream but I believe anything is possible. Short term goals include getting my music out there, doing more band gigs, and opening up for bigger bands", said the 18 year old music sensation.

Though she was not able to divulge too much detail (because of obvious reasons) the singer is definitely looking forward to unveilling some new material in the coming weeks.
"I am getting my music recorded! I’m so excited to share what I’ve been working on for the past year. My music should be available in the next month or so. I want to get it just right because it is so personal to me. My music is who I am and what I’ve been doing. I will be dropping a single first and then some after that. Stay tuned!", said Jade.
