Jazzfest Bonn: Festival Profile

Artistic Director: Peter Materna, jazz saxophonist and composer
Philosophy: Jazzfest Bonn presents celebrated national and international artists in double concerts also featuring talented young musicians and popular local performers. The artists present their own compositions or contemporary interpretations of wellknown works.
Concert format: Jazzfest Bonn features 24 concerts, presented as double concerts on 12 evenings, within three weeks.

Locations: The concerts take place in architecturally and acoustically significant concert spaces, providing a stimulating experience for both musicians and audiences. For instance in the Telekom Forum, Post Tower, Universität Bonn, Beethoven-Haus Bonn, Brotfabrik, Volksbank-Haus, Bonn Opera, and the Bundeskunsthalle.

Impact / Success: Jazzfest Bonn was founded in 2010 with the goal of filling a void in the cultural life of the city and its surrounding region. This was achieved by focusing on contemporary and innovative music at the highest level. Jazzfest Bonn has been able to expand Bonn’s musical profile beyond its traditional association with classical music and increase the city’s prominence as a musical center of national importance. Since its inception, 100 % of the festival’s concerts have been sold out.

Finances: Jazzfest Bonn is managed by the privately directed non-profit organization Jazzfest Bonn gUG. The festival provides its own funding for 90 % of its expenses. Jazzfest Bonn is made possible by the generous support of five principal sponsors: Deutsche Telekom AG, Deutsche Post DHL Group, Phoenix Reisen, Sparkasse KölnBonn, and Bechtle. In addition,  event sponsors and further partners provide financial or material assistance. Jazzfest Bonn also receives institutional support from the city of Bonn and funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Media partnerships: The festival also maintains media partnerships with Deutsche Welle, Deutschlandfunk, Bonn’s General-Anzeiger daily newspaper, and Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR).

Goals: Jazzfest Bonn manifests itself more and more as a prominent and respected European location for creative contemporary jazz. We hope in the coming years to further expand our support of new talent and provide a professional environment for promising young musicians from around the world.
