Jason Davis is an entertainment industry executive with a broad range of titles including award winning songwriter, award winning author, independent record label president, executive TV producer, entertainment consultant, former Senior VP of A&R for Dolly Parton's management company CTK management and a serial entrepreneur. He has also secured record deal offers with CEO's from the largest music companies in the world, including Capitol Records, Sony, Interscope, Island / Def Jam, Epic, Atlantic, RCA, and J Records. Over the span of his career, he has not only pioneered new approaches to the signing and development of some of the world’s most successful recording artists and songwriters but he has consistently championed innovative business models and partnerships with a wide range of companies around the world.
Urban Craft magazine had the unique opportunity of interviewing the accomplished record label exec/artist manager who was all -too- glad to share, among other things, his amazing insight on the music industry. With two decades worth of experience in the industry, he certainly had a few nuggets of wisdom to share with aspiring artists all over the world.
"Do not settle. Do not settle in your relationships, do not settle with your music or business and do not settle in life. Always pursue excellence and surround yourself with people who believe in your goals. Work on your craft daily. Remember it’s a journey. Even those who seem like an overnight success were likely working on their craft for years before being discovered. New artists should try to perform 2-4 times a month in their area and work on their voice 5-6 days a week" said Davis.

According to Jason, it is also just as important to surround yourself with the right people and be open to constructive criticism.
"They also should be thinking long and hard about who they are working with. Surround yourself with established songwriters and producers who are unusually talented at what they do in the business. They should always stay focused on their craft. Big companies always do market research and focus group testing before a launch. Like that artist should view themselves as a business and ask for opinions. The reality is artists should be asking people for their honest opinions to better their craft and songs", he explained.

It is no secret that social media and current technologies have made it easier for today's musician to get their name and music out into the world, Davis concurs..... "With social media and current technologies to produce and record music, Artists today have more resources to make better music than ever before. Artists have resources to get their music exposed on a mass level that they never had before. With the evolving potential of social media artists have a way to personally engage with fans in a more intimate way.
"If you review the Music Industry financial Reports, the music industry is strong. All of the reports agreed that streaming is the reason behind the continued upward progression of the financial gains within the industry. Consequently, all eyes are continuing to follow the increasing streaming possibilities", said Davis.

Wise words indeed, words from which a lot of artists out there can learn from and build their respective careers upon. Jason's own career is a prime example of what happens when talent, passion and a strong work ethic are put together. Having begun his career as a songwriter prior to being discovered by Grant Cunningham, the former VP of A&R for Sparrow Records - Davis went on to write a #1 Billboard hit, received several ASCAP songwriting and publishing awards, and was nominated for a latin music award. Davis has also co-founded other cutting edge entertainment companies such as Radar Label Group (Jimmy Eat World, Plain White T's, Neon Trees, The Unlikely Candidates), One One 7, Awaken Records (Austin French), and Care For Kids. He is also co-president and partner of booking agency Higher Level Agency and an artist manager with First Company Management.
"I initially began my career as a songwriter. I was fortunate to have a song discovered by Grant Cunningham, who is the former VP of A&R for Sparrow Records. My song captured was a #1 hit, which received several ASCAP songwriting and publishing awards which included one of the most radio air-played songs of the year. "Currently I have a broad range of titles including co-founder of several entertainment companies such as Radar Label Group (Jimmy Eat World, Plain White T’s, Neon Trees, The Unlikely Candidates), President of One One 7, President of Awaken Records (Austin French), and Care For Kids. I am also co-president and partner of Higher Level Agency and an artist manager with First Company Management. These diverse titles gave me the ability to build a reputation working with the top songwriters, producers, and recording artists in the entertainment industry on a global level. Over the span of my career, I have been able to pioneer new approaches to the signing and development of some of the world’s most successful recording artists and songwriters/producers", said Jason.

Traversing the greater American State between New York, London, Los Angeles, Miami and Nashville, he built a reputation working with the top songwriters, producers, and recording artists in the entertainment industry on a global level. Davis has worked with many stars, that include Boyz ll Men, Sugar Ray, P. Diddy, Alabama, Lonestar, among many others but spoke glowingly of his working experience with celebrated country music icon Dolly Parton.
"I’ve been very blessed to work with many not only talented artists, but caring individuals. However, the first name that comes to mind is Dolly Parton because she is a class act in every sense of the word. Working in the same camp of such a legend is an incredible and rare opportunity. Not to mention even more so with a legend who has unending work ethic, a great sense of humor along with the desire to help others.
"Austin French is another artist who I’ve grown to love for his heart, talent, ethics and unending drive to make music for the right reasons and he loves people well", he said.

Jason feels fortunate to have worked with all the global stars that he worked with but nothing compares to being introduced to Christ!
"I’ve been very fortunate in that from the time I wrote my first hit song, my career moved quickly. I have been blessed to have worked with many worldwide stars, Nonetheless, the biggest highlight of my career was when I was presented with the Bible and learned about Jesus Christ. It was then that my passion and heart changed. I love the connections and relationships that I've been able to build over the years and new relationships that I am forming today. I'm very passionate about working with people and artists to build something with a shared vision together", he said.
