Fans of California rap group, Substance Abuse will be super-excited with news that a brand new album, among other things, is on the way from the talented duo this year.
“A brand new Substance Abuse album.  Expect a single we're doing with Volume 10 to drop this year.  Also, Ramrock Records in the UK is going to be putting "Bridges" out on vinyl and we're putting out a "Bridges" remix EP as well.  A new side project featuring Eso Tre and Nebz Supreme (Off Da Wagon) with some Moka Only collaborations and much more”, confirmed one half of the band, ESO TRE, in a recent interview with Urban Craft magazine.

Looking back on the ground that they have covered over all these years and the milestones reached, the rap duo is very much satisfied and naturally hungers for more success.
“Substance Abuse has come a long way from when we first started. In the beginning it was a tremendous love of hip hop. Freestyling with our friends and getting lifted, not caring about the money aspect of the biz one bit. We met a dope crew in Santa Barbara called mic.edu.  One of the rappers, our buddy Erik Solo, had a dope radio show called "The Lair" with another Mic.Edu member, DJ Lion, where they played only the best hip hop from both coasts.
“We linked up with a producer named NO and made our first tracks, Fake Contacts and Century 21, and The Lair played em, much to our delight. To us it was a big deal to get on college radio so quickly after recording our first songs, and it was a tremendous honor. Those songs ended up on a spit cassette tape called "Brand New Crime" we did with mic.edu. That tape eventually got us a deal with Ground Control Records.  And although our path in the music industry has been circuitous, we've worked with and gotten respect from some of the best rappers in the game. If you told us in the beginning we'd one day being doing a song with MC Eiht or KRS-One, I doubt we would have believed you”, he said.

Eso Tre reckons that real hiphop still has a place in society even in today’s world where the ‘trap’ genre has virtually ‘diluted’ most people’s perception of what hiphop is.
“Our journey has had its fair share of ups and downs. The ups are when we get somebody hitting us up saying they just posted our video on a blog or played our song on the radio. The downs are when we see what appears to be a massive apathy towards the kind of hip hop we do. I say "appears to be" because there are a lot of people who love true hip hop, but have become jaded in their search for it and have given up. It gives the false appearance that the music we do is not appreciated, and it is.  It's just a matter of pushing and pushing until you find those people.  And many of them are a whole new generation of millenials who aren't feeling the BS hip hop they've been subjected to”, said the rapper.

Hiphop is still very much alive in Eso Tre’s eyes and he asserts that Substance Abuse will do everything in their power to make sure that it remains so for decades to come.
“When our first album "Overproof" came out, it got four stars in both Urb and Scratch Magazine, which at the time were two respected print periodicals that covered hiphop. Some people said it was one of their favorite hiphop albums, and even one of the best albums they owned. The blog coverage we've received on the song "Rear View" we did with KRS-One and the video "Bridges" with Aceyalone have been incredible. Hiphop is alive and well and it shows in the support people have been giving to our material, which doesn't sound like a lot of the stuff out now.
“Our first album "Overproof", our sophomore album "Background Music" and the follow up EP "Background Music: The Redux." Last year we were pushing our single "Bridges" really hard and letting people know we were still around, doing our thing”, he said.
