“I am a self-starter who is creative, motivated and born to overcome and achieve greatness. I believe in service and taking care of those who are less fortunate. I believe in The Lord and I follow the ways of the Most high. I know that there are many ways of the truth and healing paths in this life. I have a dream, vision and plan of action inspired by God and my family and loved ones”, said AWII Sports founder, Renaldo Cortez Rip Gates, while speaking to Urban Craft magazine on the sidelines of announcing that the international brand will be launching in South Africa before year end.

The former ballplayer and trailblazing entrepreneur has got quite a busy couple of months ahead that will be packed full of programs and initiatives that he has been spearheading for years now.

The work that will take center stage over these coming months is but the culmination of the tireless efforts of one man who believed back then as he does now in the honor that comes with service to humanity!

“What I am working on thus far is AWII Sports South Africa, our equity driven and inclusion minded basketball projects, our apparel brand and Our Program initiatives.
Awii Sports South Africa Pre Launch in June, Unveiling our apparel and Basketball Products in South Africa In July, Our Basketball Clinics and Camps

“In the long term, the plan is to start our Direct Selling Program, host our Basketball clinics, grow our impact and create high quality products, goods and services, change all the lives we engage through our AWII BRAND of Basketball and Products”, said Gates.

On a more personal level, Renaldo said he had his mind set on completing books which are ‘Sun Kissed by the South African Sun’ and Clean Your Room Renaldo’ and also launch the Renaldo Cortez Brand and Success System, among other things.

“Apart from launching my Sports / Business magazine and opening a basketball academy
post grad prep school, I’m hoping to build my home in south Africa, open a church/ temple and share the message of hope”, he said.

But just Who is Renaldo Cortez Rip Gates?

It’s a question that the man who is the proud owner of a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Pittsburgh, co-founder of Simply Betsy Company in Cleveland Ohio, Founder and CEO of Awii Sports Holdings Incorporated, Visionary and CEO of AWII Sports South Africa NPO/ NPC, co-owner of the Akron Rise ABA professional Basketball organization 200/ 10, Creator of WE GOT WINNERS BASKETBALL SYSTEM, Professional Basketball Player- Soweto Panthers  PBL South Africa 1998, Associate Coach and Technical Director Soweto Panthers 2018, BNLSA/ fiba Africa Champions, was all too happy to indulge!

“I was blessed as a young person to know wealth and aspects of poverty in America. The 70’s forged a value system of hard work and economic entrepreneurship. My father had me in sports early because I was very hyper active and suffered from ADD/ADHD and was on Ritalin for years until I was 11 years of age. I took myself off of it because it impacted me in adverse ways. I attended St. Ann’s catholic school until 8th Grade and I then attended Roxboro Junior High which is a public school. Now I was an Extreme athlete and competitor who refused to lose”, said Renaldo.

That strong mental resolve and competitiveness made sure that the entrepreneur athlete was always ready for whatever life threw at him.

“Losing and being told ‘no’ was against my inner belief system that drove me to achieve. I hated to lose and I would do anything to win but cheat. I was always a hustler who had many small businesses as a youth. I loved to make Money, play sports, eat and win at everything. I played sports on as many teams as I could. Football, soccer, baseball, basketball, track, hockey, swimming and many others… I was into sports, hunting, fishing and hiking in the parks. I was blessed to do a lot. My father being in television industry opened many doors for us. Mom was a Minister and servant of the Lord. They taught the ways of the Lord to us in all we did.
“High school I was a soccer Player and Basketball Player, I graduated in 1990 went to college in Minnesota at Northland Technical community college, joined the Army national Guard in Fargo North Dakota, played college football and Basketball for one Year. Transferred to Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland and played college basketball and soccer.
I transferred to University of Pittsburgh upon meeting the requirements to graduate with my associates of arts degree. I would play two years for the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Graduate with My Bachelor of arts Degree in international Business communications. My focus of study at community college was Urban Studies and Sociology with a special focus on religion and anthropology.
“I turned Pro and started to chase the dream of being a NBA player in which I did not obtain the NBA as a Player but I was able to achieve success in basketball as a professional player in South Africa PBL, Soweto Panthers, Canada - Harlem Kings, FCA- Fellowship of Christian athletes. I tried with the NBA on different occasions, played in the NBA summer league in Long Beach in 1995, South west pro League in Dallas Texas and tried out with the Grand Rapid hoops of the CBA”, he said.
