For a man with close to 3 decades-worth of experience in the game, United States entertainer, Chris Phillips, otherwise popularly known in the music circles by the name DJ Phlegm, the secret to his longevity is simple..Music itself provides therapeutic value and with all the artists that he works with, he is never short of inspiration and the hunger to continue doing what he does.
“The creativity and collaborating with like-minded people is what drives me. It is a form of therapy when I make music. Inspiration comes from the many artist I have listened to and/or worked with in my life”, said Dj Phlegm.
The decorated musician took time to reflect on memories past and the colorful moments that have paved his journey in the industry over the last couple of decades.
“My first journey in music started in the 90's as a DJ. I started deejaying some local Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas clubs about a year after I started practicing. I had to amass a good selection of vinyl records before I could even DJ a proper set. I also did some local DJ battles in the late 90's as well. In late 2001, I helped create Nu-Metal band Stillborn Nursery and would perform and tour through the United States until the end of 2004.
“We accomplished a lot in the band and in 2003 we won Metal Band of the Year in Dallas, TX from the radio station 97.1 the Eagle. After the band, I continued to produce and release new albums. I collaborated with musicians worldwide playing shows on the Big Island of Hawaii and in Texas.
“My band’s old album was very significant in my life. That was the first album I was a part of as a musician. The albums I am producing now have been some of my best work so far in my opinion. Please stay tuned and be on the look out for those”, said Dj Phlegm.
Talking to Urban Craft magazine this past week, the DJ/producer also opened up about what he was working on that we could expect in the foreseeable future.
“Currently I’m working on a few projects. I have a producer album featuring the likes of Rakaa from Dilated Peoples, Blueprint and other emcees from around the United States with a projected release in the fall of 2019. I also have an album with Dallas/Fort Worth rapper Heir Max called Hand Held Scud with a projected release this year as well.
“My immediate goals are to finish the two albums I am currently working on. My long-term goals are to finish the other projects that have taken a backseat to these projects. It is a never ending cycle”, he added.
