Russian singer Christina Karpukhina aka Kris Kaizen sees her forthcoming debut rock album as the perfect opportunity to address a few ‘thorny’ issues, not just in her own homeland but everywhere else across the globe.
Speaking to Urban Craft magazine from her base in Moscow, the exceptionally-talented songwriter opened up to us about the production process of the album itself and more importantly, the topics/themes that this particular project will focus on.
“I’m sleeping, eating and ...well...living in one of the best recording studios in Moscow to finish my debut rock album. It is a creature of two worlds - recorded in Russia, mixed and mastered in Los Angeles. So East and West intertwined and two mentalities merged into one.
“By means of these songs, I’m going to give a shout out to the thorny issues existing not only in my country but all over the world. Every story, every word in every song of mine is true. This album is not only about me. It’s about people I know, people I don’t know, but heard their stories… this album is for everyone that feels like they’re stuck or in doubt about who they are. I want them to know that they are not alone. That there are more of “Us” out there”, said Christina.
Having spent the better part of her career writing for other artists, Kris feels that now is the perfect time to put all the focus on her own projects, starting with this upcoming album.
“Last year I participated in Russian version of The Voice show. As a songwriter, I wrote for many singers, not only Russian but European and western also. There were famous names among them. I am really proud of some collaborations. But now, my own project is my number one priority and I am putting all my passion and life energy into it. I wish everyone could have this dream or idea that would make their heart burn so wild!”, she said.
The singer who describes herself as a ‘devoted rebel’ is more motivated than ever before to succeed where nobody ever thought she would! People telling her that she couldn’t do it gave her just the fire and motivation that she needed to push even harder to prove them all wrong.
“There’s a child in me, thanks to the Universe - after all these storms, my little Kris is still alive. She reminds me of her dreams. She tells me what to want even when I seem not to want anything. She’s my best friend and motivator. When I look at the world with her eyes, everything gets better and I feel so much power that I am ready and willing to help people, to love them and to empower them. This child is so badass that, I believe, she can change the world.
“People always told me that everything I was dreaming about was impossible. But I’ve always been a rebel. Whenever someone says ‘You can’t’ or ‘You’ll never…” I say “Just watch me!” I’m just doing what I feel I should to get what I want. I came here to get what I feel is mine”, she said, assertively.
Provided that making your way in the Russian music industry as singer is no stroll in the park, Christina has done wonders over these last few years to be recognized. Just this February she got an award for ‘Best Rock Singer of the Year 2019’, starred in some projects and participated in several TV-shows. She is back to ghostwriting as well, BUT now she writes only if she feels like it.
“Making your way in the world of Russian music is no picnic. It’s a struggle unless you are a pop-singer. I’ve been singing in rock-bands since high-school but started my professional journey in music as a songwriter. I’ve been writing for many artists of various genres. I hated this period of my life. I felt like I was forced to say what they wanted me to say, not what I really thought or felt. It seemed like it became all about the money. One day my Mentor and vocal teacher told me: “Enough! From now on you are writing songs just for yourself.
“So I concentrated mainly on my own projects, recorded several singles and...moved to Asia. I got an offer from a touring band - they were urgently looking for a new vocalist and accidentally found me. So I signed a contract and flew away from Russia. That was a time of colossal evolving and great pains. But I grew much during that tour and I am very thankful for that period. I refused to prolong the contract - that collaboration turned into bare money-making. But I was striving for growth. I returned to Russia and started from ‘zero point”: Join a band - breakup. Start a new band - breakup, next band…”, she narrated.
All eyes and ears will surely be waiting to hear what the talented singer/songwriter has to offer once her debut rock album hits record stores!
