Long Island, New York singer/songwriter Kalene recently teased us with news of a new single.
Though she was not in a position to share much in terms of details, she did however say that the single would pay homage to her film influences and that it will involve slapstick comedy.
“I’m currently working on my next single, “Just a Man (Donna)” with producer Robert L. Smith of Defy Recordings (credits include: Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga, David Bowie). We’re looking to revamp this tune from what I’ve performed out with the band live. I plan on shooting the video some time next month. I’d like to pay homage to some of my biggest film influences with this concept I had in mind. I won’t spill the beans just yet... but it will involve slapstick comedy”, said Kalene, speaking to us from her base in New York.
Apart from releasing the upcoming single, the musician said that she had, among other things, set her sights on taking her music on the road and sampling it for various audiences across the nation.
“Immediate goals are to finish up this record and shoot this video before the end of summer. I’d like to play one of these big festivals someday. Like Glastonbury or Coachella. That’d be super rad. And to have my music on the radio, touring the world. Sharing my poetry in hopes to inspire others to write, as well... I’d also like to get married to my fiancé”, said the singer.
Performing is something that Kalene was born into and though not a lot of people might have been aware of this, the entertainer had initially set-out to be a movie star! Writing came easily to the performer, for, it was more than just the mere jotting down of words for her, it became a much-needed outlet.
“I grew up in the performing arts and for the longest time I was set on being a movie star. That all changed when I was about 19/20 years old after I had gone through an abusive relationship with someone I had trusted dearly in the film industry. My only outlet was writing. I had never been much of a singer, I had to work quite hard at it to get to where I’ve gotten. Even now I still look to continue to improve on my voice, but writing always came naturally to me. So in a time of depression and grieving, lyrics just flew right out of me. I don’t play an instrument so that also made it difficult to write songs to the standard that most people understand, but with my words came melodies and so I would just sing my poems and present them as songs until I started hiring a band to play out with me”, said Kalene.
The rising star has witnessed quite an upsurge in followers over the last couple of months, all due to her unique sound and artistry. It is a trend that the musician hopes will continue for years to come.
“I’m still very much in the beginning stages, but I have had a slow uprise in my fan base which is certainly neat to watch. A few fans have reached out to me about my debut single “Silver Secret Lace” and how it has inspired them. I’m just hoping to keep the sounds of rock music alive. I’ve been invited to perform a few industry showcases. Some of my songs have been also optioned for podcast and radio airplay which is pretty neat.
“In the last year alone, I’ve played all over NYC, ranging from venues like Pianos to Arlene’s Grocery. I’ve released my first single and my debut music video has reached over 22,000 views on YouTube. I’m currently in a state of revamping, reshaping my brand, but new music is definitely on the horizon! I plan to release my next single, ‘Just a Man’ (Donna) this fall”, said Kalene.
