“I just want to be able to create dope music. Music is a universe of feelings, for every feeling we have I believe there is a perfect sound track. I just want to contribute to that huge library of music the greats before me created. One drive I have is to be one of the remembered Asian artists. There are not that many emcees of Asian-origin in the hiphop game except for the likes of Dumbfoundead, Ruby Ibarra and Manila Grey who have popped up in recent times. All I want is to be recognized and mentioned in the same conversation with that new wave of artists”, said Canadian based rapper Lyrique when asked about what keeps him motivated.

He was of course speaking to Urban Craft magazine on the sidelines of announcing that he was working on a brand new EP.
“I’m currently working on a new EP and hoping to drop this new project at some point this summer. With this EP I have enlisted the help of my good friend and local Calgary producer/audio engineer “AMAURHI”. I want this EP to be different, I have been listening to different sounds and flows lately, so I’m trying to veer away from sounds I have released before but still keep true to my influences. I have been listening to a lot of Tame Impala, Kanye West, Childish Gambino and Jaden Smith. So those are a few inspirations this EP sound is sonically basing off”, he said.

While all the focus seems to be on his latest EP for now, the young entertainer expressed a strong desire do all that he possibly can over the coming months in order to make sure his career maintains a steady rise.
“My immediate goal is to be successful with streams, views, merchandise and possibly land a publishing/record deal. I just want to be recognized in my City. Calgary’s hiphop scene I should say has been flourishing the last couple of years. I just want to have sold out venues and have the support of my community. Hopefully, that support from my city will manifest itself throughout the country and eventually the global village as well”, said the rapper whose real name is Edward Que.

Lyrique is part of Alberta’s “HONOR ROLL MUSIC COLLECTIVE” and his music can be described as trap hiphop mixed with rnb melodies and the classical fuse of boom bap hiphop. He is inspired by the likes of Jaden Smith, J. Cole, Childish Gambino and Frank Ocean. The artist has been featured on MTV Philippines, Complex Magazine, CBC and Global news. Notably, he has opened for household names like TYGA, Chali 2na (from Jurassic 5) and Lloyd Banks.
“It has been a tough yet promising journey. I have had many ups and downs from changing the people I work with to changing my inner circle. I find that working with people who share the same image, vision and sound as you is important than trying to force the formula. If you work with the right people, the right things happen. Music is a journey best enjoyed through feelings. So far my highlights are being featured on COMPLEX magazine, MTV Philippines and CBC radio.
“I have been a part of a lot of cool things and I should say that one of the most impactful was being able to play the TED talk YYC show. I was selected as the M.C. to be part of an amazing live band set up in front of a crowd of hundreds to a thousand people. See, like any other city there are rappers and there are top tier musicians, I am blessed to have been selected to be part of an elite group. Being recognized by local Canadian hiphop platforms such as 10at10 and this new Rapper/DJ tandem with Calgary great, DJ C-sik are some of the most impactful projects that I have been part of thus far. This guy is a beast, having won the Red Bull crown back-to-back and even to being on ‘Sway in the Morning’. I am blessed to have him play by my side. I think it’s pretty awesome and quite a dope look for Filipinos in the rap game”, said Lyrique.

The emcee who hails from the Philippines has enjoyed relative success since relocating to the city of Calgary.
“I am proud of this City which I have made my home after migrating here 5 year's ago on my own from the Philippines. My music has recently been featured on COMPLEX magazine and is on rotation on MTV Asia as well as being played on CBC's Radio Q. I have also been fortunate enough to perform at TEDxYYC at the Jack Singer Hall and the ‘One Love Music Festival’. Apart from that, I am also set to perform at this years K-Days Music festival, main stage in Edmonton, Canada”, he said.
