Founded as a platform ‘to showcase emerging and established artists, writers and directors’, The Galloway Theatre, situated in the heart of Cape Town, has over the years arisen as one of South Africa’s most recognized arts & entertainment spots.
Urban Craft magazine, through our own Godfrey Johnson (G.J) caught up for an interview with Luke Unser (L.U) from The Galloway Theatre and The Waterfront Theatre School, Cape Town.

Below are excerpts from that insightful chat……..

GJ: Hello sir. Can you give us a brief history of The Galloway Theatre?

LU: The Galloway Theatre is named after the late Keith Galloway (Writer/ Director/ Actor) and was founded as a platform to showcase emerging and established artists, writers and directors.
The theatre itself is located in the former Mission to Seaman Chapel (c1901). This year marks the 5th Anniversary of The Galloway Theatre.
The former Managers of the theatre were Deon Bischoff and Sharon Everett.
Delia Sainsbury and Paul Griffiths (The Directors of The Waterfront Theatre School and The Galloway Theatre) have been working to keep Keith Galloway's vision for the theatre going whilst maintaining the wonderful heritage of this former chapel.

GJ: You are a multi-talented individual who is passionate about all art forms. When did you first discover your passion for theatre?

LU: My love of theatre began very much as a youngster. Since I was in primary school I was drawn to performance and the stage and found myself attending the Spotlight drama academy where I was really able to develop my craft. After school is where I really found my love of theatre itself from Directing to the technical aspects while studying performance at CityVarsity and was really able to expand on this at UCT in my postgraduate year.

GJ: How long have you been part of The Galloway Theatre and what does your position entail?

LU: I have now been a part of The Galloway Theatre for just over a year whilst I was working under Sharon for the later part of 2018. As the Theatre Manager I deal with the bookings of The Galloway and the online sales whilst maintaining the theatre space. When it comes to shows I look after our front of house and make sure that everyone is as ready as they can be for show time.

GJ: What personal projects are you working on right now?

LU: I am currently working on my online content for YouTube where I upload sketch comedy.

GJ: The Galloway is connected to The Waterfront Theatre School. How can potential students find out more about studying at this wonderful place?

LU: For more information on The Waterfront Theatre School you may go to the website: all the information they would need can be found there and if not just follow the directions/ call and they can speak to one of our lovely members of staff. The Waterfront Theatre School is currently putting on a dance show at The Masque theatre called From The Top (Poster Attached) for those interested in seeing what the dancers of The Waterfront Theatre School have been working tirelessly on!

GJ: How do you unwind?

LU: To unwind I enjoy a lovely cup of coffee with some YouTube content to keep me entertained and informed.

GJ: Where do we find the programme and how does one book?

LU: All our bookings and upcoming shows are presented on TIXSA which can be accessed from the BOOK NOW link on the Waterfront Theatre School's home page or by following the link:
