Founded in September 2017 by Alison Maseko and Tefo Ntlhane, the story of ‘Do You Be You Records’ is unlike no other label out there.

Just like its name might suggest, it has become a home where rising stars can discover who they are and develop their brand, all in the same vein.

These sentiments were shared by founding member, Alison Maseko in a recent chat with Urban Craft, in which he also painted a clearer picture of what ‘Do You Be You’ Records stands for and opened up on a few of their current and upcoming projects as well.
“As we grew in the industry, we saw a lot of potential in a lot of people (artists), in the sense that they would share their music with us and normally advise that they are sending it to big named labels with no luck from them. That’s when we decided to help and give advice where we can. The world has a lot of unknown talented artists, where the talent just dies out due to a lack of resources and connections. We came up with an idea of helping these artists, by giving them the resources they need to startup. By resources, we mean studio time and advice on branding and marketing themselves. It’s not easy getting studio time from labels, at times, due to finances, we are wiping that out. You can walk into the ‘Do You Be You’ Records studios and ask for studio time, we will gladly assist.
“The label is a non-profit organization that doesn’t sign artists but rather gives them a platform to express themselves musically. Hence the name “Do you Be you”, we give an individual the power to be themselves, “to do them and be them”. By giving them a platform to understand their strengths and weakness and finding their place in the music industry”, said Maseko.

The emerging record label also has its own merchandise, from branded T-shirts, hoodies, sweat pants, bucket hat and caps, etc. Sale of the merchandise helps keep the organization financially sustainable.
“It has been a bumpy and fun ride, from Music to selling our merchandise. And just having people wearing our merchandise, a big shout out to them, having someone wearing the label’s merchandise, with that message “Do you Be you” boldly printed in the front, that on its own has an impact. It drives the movement of making people believe in themselves. Don’t let people affect the dream that you have, the vision that you see. Focus, despite all the obstacles”, said the founder.

Music-wise, the label has a few projects lined up for the remainder of 2019 and beyond. Alison was more than happy to open up on a few of those during our interview.
“One of the biggest projects coming up this year is our second album titled “2nd Belief”, which will be released on the 27th of October 2019. This album consists of 14 tracks, each track was produced by different artists, which makes the album diverse. We also have a single by Alison Maseko titled Lost in Memories, which will be coming out on the 27th of September. The third project that we are looking to do, will be the official launch of the "Instagram store". A separated Instagram account from the original "@doyoubeyourecords" will be created, the account will focus only on the marketing and selling of all our merchandise. This account will be active from November 2019. We pretty excited about this”, he said.

Alison Maseko will also be releasing a song with Venessa Jackson titled Crumbled Memories.

It seems that for this collective of creatives, the line ‘Do You Be You’ has clearly become more than just another tag-line, it has become a way of life!
