Bianca Flanders is an actress, voice artist and teacher based in Cape Town. She graduated from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2011 with a degree in Theatre and Performance, then went on to obtain her Postgraduate Certificate of Education in 2012, also at UCT.

Pumpkin Finds Her Queen is a new book written by the multi-talented Bianca Flanders.

Pumpkin Finds Her Queen is a touching  story about finding what makes you special ...
Pumpkin had a secret, Something that made her sad ... Pumpkin didn’t like her hair. She thought her curls were bad.”
Pumpkin Pie has a secret. She doesn’t like her hair at all! Her wild locks just won’t be tamed. She can’t hide even her curly hair. Why can’t her hair just look like those of her friends?
Soon, though, Pumpkin discovers that her wild, curly hair makes her unique.
The book ties in with important debates surrounding the styling of natural hair. It is not something that has ever been discussed in traditional, Western children’s books, yet it is a topic of contention on the majority of households in this country.

More importantly, Bianca understands hair. Like Pumpkin, Bianca has had to learn to love the lovely curls she was born with.

Pumpkin finds her queen is available from leading retailers and direct from LAPA Publishers. website: www.lapa.co.za.

The multi-talented artiste caught up with ourour own Godfrey Johnson (GJ) recently and below is how their chat went:

GJ: Gorgeous Bianca, your book is a best seller, how does it feel?

BF: It feels absolutely incredible! I'm blown away by the response. It's very affirming and inspires me to keep on writing and creating.

GJ: What inspired you to write a children’s book?

BF: I've always been an avid reader. Books formed such an important part of my childhood and the way I saw the world. I've always struggled with my hair, and it took me a while to learn to love. I had hoped by writing a children's book about hair, I could save other kids the struggle that I had to go through!

GJ: You are multi-talented and creatively adventurous, how many projects are you currently working on and what are they?

BF: As I write this, I'm currently working on a couple of things. The book is definitely one of them, and then I'm going to the Northern Cape to work with Garage Dance Company on a production.

GJ: Please name a few career highlights..

BF: I think that playing the role of 'Krotoa' was definitely a highlight for me. It was a challenging part and such an honour to get the opportunity to pay homage to an incredible woman. I'd also have to say writing and performing in my one-woman cabaret was a highlight! I did it with my best friend, Iman Isaacs who is a director and writer too. It was such a great learning opportunity for us and it taught me a lot about myself. And then I think doing Happy New Year at The Fugard. I loved the okay and it was so great to do a two-hander with Dean. And of course, Pumpkin!

GJ: What are you planning for the festive season? Any rest for Bianca?
BF: I'm going to Plett for a week in January! I plan to lie on the beach all day reading tacky fiction and eating mangos. I can't wait!

GJ: Where can one purchase ‘Pumpkin Finds Her Queen’?

BF: They should be available at most major bookstores, like Exclusive Books and The Book Lounge. It's selling out very quickly, so people are also welcome to order online through LAPA.

GJ: I feel ‘Pumpkin Finds Her Queen - The Musical’ coming on. What do you think?

BF: I would absolutely LOVE that! You never know. This year has taught me that anything can happen!

GJ: How do you relax?

BF: I love to read. I also enjoy cooking, so one of my favourite past-times is having a glass of wine, and pumping up the music in the kitchen while cooking something delicious. Spending time with family and friends is also another way I relax. They ground me and make life's stresses seem small and manageable.

GJ: What advice would you give to
the insecure and shy little person who dreams of being a dancer, a movie star, a doctor, an author, a dancer or a pilot?

BF: I would tell them to DO it. Dreams are important, but nothing ever happens without action. Also, I find the most wonderful things happen on the other side of fear. Everyone gets scared and nervous, that's normal. Try to fight through and do it anyway. You never know what you're capable of until you try!

GJ: Where can we find you on social media?

BF:You can find me on Instagram at @bianca.flanders or @pumpkinfindsherqueen13
