At just the age of 18, she has not only managed to make her presence in the industry felt but has been building a reputable brand while at it too! Her list of accolades include 2nd Runner-Up 2019 Toronto Blues Society Talent Search, nomination for ‘Jazz Recording of the Year’ 2016 Hamilton Music Awards, Winner – 2016 TD Niagara Jazz Festival ‘Jazz for the Ages’ Youth talent Competition, 1st Runner-up – 2015 Juno Sound Off Singing Contest and Winner – 2014 Rise2Fame Youth Talent Search – Western Fair District. Teen sensation, Avery Raquel spoke to Urban Craft magazine a while back and gave us an idea into how far she had come and an insight into what she was working on for the foreseeable future.

For the benefit of our readers, would you mind telling us a bit about yourself and just how far you've come in the industry?

(A.R) I am a singer/songwriter, from Hamilton, Ontario,Canada. I started singing at the age of 4 after my parents took me to see a stage musical. I came home and memorized all the songs and dances and performed it for them, and that was a signal to them that I wanted to get more into this. Not long after that I started acting, for stage, TV, animation etc, but never losing my passion for music. At around age 7, my parents introduced me to jazz and that resonated with me quite nicely. I became very invested in the idea of that genre and wanted to continue it. By age 13 I was beginning to put my first album together (all jazz). It was independently produced, and was a mix of popular songs from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s re-arranged as jazz songs.

Soon after, I got a publicist, who then introduced me to my current producer Greg
Kavanagh, who has been instrumental in my musical development over the last 3
years. We began co-writing originals, slowly revising my style from Jazz to
contemporary soul/RnB, as I released my 2nd solo album, “Without a Little Rain.” That album received critical acclaim in the press and radio airplay across Canada.
We immediately began writing for “My Heart Away”, my 3rd solo project, which
debuted on the Canadian iTunes top 200 RnB chart at #11. It’s pretty cool to say I saw
my name above the weekend on a chart. Since the release of that album I’ve been
performing across the province and into the states, including many major music
festivals. I continue to perform around 40-50 shows a year, while attending school
towards my Honours Bachelor Degree in Music. I can say that I’ve grown incredibly
from the time I was 7 singing Jazz standards in my room, to seeing my originals on a chart.

What would you say was your career-defining moment and how has the
journey in the industry been thus far?

(A.R) A career defining moment for me would be when I had my 2nd album release for "Without a Little Rain". The release concert was held at a local Toronto, Ontario club. With my team, we were able to promote the show heavily on social media, on radio, and in the press. Performance day was amazing. To my surprise, the venue was filled wall to wall, and mostly with people I had never seen before. They seemed to all get so into my music and were enjoying themselves. From that 2 hour concert, I was able to say to myself that “this is what I am going to do with my life.” It was a really great feeling. Since then, through the 3rd album, and now continuing to write, it’s help define my focus, and my path moving forward.

Can you give us an insight into your professional career and some of the work/projects you have been involved in thus far?

(A.R) As mentioned, I began acting at the age of 6 and have been on film, TV, radio, and stage. My first acting job was for a television sci-fi episodic called ‘Falling Skies’, predicted by Steven Spielberg. Since that job, I’ve done short films, radio and
commercials, and even animations and voice-over work, including ‘Ella The Elephant’ for Disney. On stage I’ve performed in professional productions of The Secret Garden, and Mary Poppins, including the first Canadian production for Drayton Entertainment, and again reprising the role in Halifax Canada. Once I hit the age of 14, there were less acting roles for me to audition for, so we focused more on the music. That’s when we released my first solo album. That led to a second album in 2017, mostly of original songs. Then my third album in 2018, all originals. I continue to perform in some of Canada’s best known venues and festivals.

What are you working on right now that we can look forward to? Please provide
us with the particular details….

(A.R) Currently, I continue to write. Mostly on my own now, though the odd collaboration stillo ccurs. We continue to push ‘My Heart Away’ as much as possible. Not sure if I’m working towards another full album, or simply the odd single release, I’m just writing as much as I can. I continue to perform, and do have a number of very exciting opportunities in the new year, Before that, I’ve released a holiday cover song ‘This Christmas’, by Donny Hathaway. It’s available now on iTunes for pre-order, and officially dropping November 22nd. My style continues to grow, and evolve. I still sings ome Jazz in my concerts, but more contemporary soul/RnB. I’m greatly influenced by music from the 70’s, funk, MoTown, etc. My goal is to re-create the classic sound but in a new fresh way.

How has the journey been thus far and what have you set your sights on for
the remainder of the year and beyond?

(A.R) The journey has been nothing I could have imagined when I was 7. I feel so lucky that I know what I want to do with my life at this age. I have the most amazing support
system and team in the world, who I know are 100% behind me, no matter what.
Without my parents I would not be where I am today, and I wouldn’t know where to go
in the future. For the remainder of the year I am going to continue to perform and
promote my music as much as possible.
As briefly mentioned, and I can’t say too much, we are working on a project that will
launch early in 2020, with the goal of further exposure in the states and Europe.
Possibly even a chart listing here or there.
Of course, I will always keep writing music, and maybe put out a single or two, or a full
album, if the songs come together. Either way, music is a big part of my life, and I look forward to whatever lies ahead.
