With it being Valentine’s, love is definitely in the air! Whether it is through art or everyday expression, matters of the heart are taking center stage everywhere that you look.

Undoubtedly, everybody is doing what they can to honour the month of love.

Not to be outdone is rising singer Megan Ferreira, who recently unveiled a brand new single that tackles love, albeit, in an ‘unconventional’ manner.

Titled ‘Steal Your Youth’ the single was released a few days back and has already garnered some considerable traction for the singer/songwriter.

“I have received messages from all over the world complimenting my song and I am just so grateful to have been given the opportunity to reach so many people already. If my song can speak to just one person’s deepest feelings, if it puts their thoughts onto paper, I have succeeded.

“This song is a little bit unconventional, as am I! It is a song about a forbidden love between an older man and a younger lady. The older man is completely smitten with this girl but he knows that the age difference makes this complicated as well as almost impossible. The chorus says, ‘steal your youth, I can’t make you mine. Another life would’ve been my time’. The older man loves this lady so much that he wants her to live her life and experience her youth without being held back by him. He wishes he were younger so that their stars could’ve aligned. He is terrified that the prospect of them being together will lead her astray from all of her hopes and dreams and he wants her to be young without feeling the pressure of a relationship”, said Megan in an exclusive interview with Urban Craft magazine.

Delving deeper into the song itself, this is what the artist had to say,

“The song also says, ‘steal your youth, I should make you mine. Another life for you and I’. Here the man is almost so overwhelmed by the thought of being with her that he is thinking about just taking the plunge and making her his. He can offer her a new life, one completely different to what she knows. He is at war with himself because at one point he knows she has an entire life ahead of her, with endless possibilities and he does not want to get in the way of that. But at the same time, she sets a fire within him that he has never experienced in his life before and he is considering taking the route which he thinks would be selfish.

“However, it is not a love story with a happy ending. It is a story of two star crossed lovers. A love which is forbidden. A love which cannot be. However, it is a story of a love so intense that the man is willing to give up his desires and suppress a feeling which he has never felt before. A feeling which makes him feel alive again. This is about a love so real it is almost tangible.
“The song teaches us that sometimes, we have to learn how to love people from a distance. He will never forget her, and maybe that’s the only forever the two of them were meant to have”, she said.

Megan is a born and bred Zimbabwean farm girl whose passion has always been music.

“I never really got the opportunity to take it further than recording songs in my bedroom!! Playing the piano and writing takes me into another world, it allows me to put all my feelings onto paper and it is my escape.
Like I said, my passion has always been music, but the first time I decided to take the plunge was in high school. I auditioned for our school’s singing competition on a complete whim and without being prepared I belted out ‘Valerie’ by Amy Winehouse to a panel of teachers. They were impressed and I made it onto the show. However, I never felt that I had what it took to make something out of my dreams and so nothing much came of it after that”, said the singer.

Being able to positively impact her listener’s lives is one of the things that keeps Megan motivated, ready and willing to record more material for music fans everywhere.
“Recently, someone hear me singing while I was cleaning the house and he complimented me on my sound. This sparked my desire to sing again and I was given the opportunity by a ‘knight in shining armour’, to record my first song, along with a video. This was unimaginable to me as I never saw myself actually chasing my dream to sing, and more importantly to touch people’s emotions with my lyrics.
“My music in inspired by the intense love I feel for people. Relationships that I’ve had and those that I desire to have. My ability to see people for who they truly are and not who they portray to be. My songs will always be dedicated to people, those who I have loved and those who I have lost. And those I will never get a chance to do either with”, she said.
