Godfrey Johnson talks to composer, actor, performer and dear friend Roland Perold about lockdown and creative ways of keeping art alive.
GJ: Where are you right now?
RP: In Durban! I’ve recently relocated and (luckily) concluded the move shortly before lockdown was announced. So I’m settled and unpacking boxes…. (the never-ending story)
GJ: How have you been spending this lockdown time?
RP: Well, I’m used to running projects and working from home (when not on the boards or the open sea) so I decided to see this period as a 3 week project. I made myself a daily schedule of tasks that include learning new material, brushing up some old piano pieces, German study (my official hobby now, learning Deutsch), and reading. The evenings are for Netflix… so not much has changed there.
GJ: What advice do you have for the artists who are feeling particularly anxious about the future?
RP: Stop fretting; and do something productive now. If there’s any action you can take NOW to improve your prospects for the future, take it!
Suggestions:
1. Learn a new skill online.
2. Get informed and up to date by reading about your particular niche in the market; and wider industry movements or trends.
3. Expand your repertoire (new songs, monologues for auditions, etc)
4. Exercise every day. It will reduce stress and give you a positive boost. Just imagine how good you’ll feel when you’re in great mental and physical shape next time you have to go in front of the camera or onstage.
GJ: What are your plans for the future?
RP: I’m keen to produce and get some new work onto the boards; either revue or cabaret. I’m also working on a new original musical but that will be for 2021. Once the lockdown ends audiences will, once again, need to be uplifted and entertained… let’s be ready to deliver.
GJ: Please do share a few career highlights.....
RP: I've always felt most fulfilled when surrounded by a company (big or small) that's working on an exciting project; and to see that production flourish. I guess highlight moments would be when that particular show has been one that I've produced myself. I'm really happy when I can make something that creates work for others. If I have to pick I'd say the productions of "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" and "Coward & Cole" I hold dearest to my heart.
