Urban Craft Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing talented country artist Steven Metz (S.M) recently. The singer who recently released a new single Luck of My Own, a song that he describes as "an anthem for the hard-up and downtrodden. It serves as a call-to-action for the blue collar every-man to make the best of tough situations" has over the years opened for country superstars like Darius Rucker, Luke Combs, Rodney Atkins, Maren Morris, and Hardy, among others. While he isn’t performing at one of Nashville’s iconic Broadway venues, he can be found playing Carolina Country Music Fest and the NASCAR Silver Bullet Bash

Metz spent this past winter working with Sal Oliveri in the studio. Oliveri has worked with artists such as Chris Stapleton, Keith Urban, Garth Brooks, Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney in the past.

Below is how our short but insightful chat went down.

You recently released a new single. Would you mind telling us more about that song and how it came together?

[S.M] Writing “Luck of My Own” was my way of venting some frustrations I was experiencing in my life at the time. I was in the middle of a tough breakup, low on cash, and felt like I was stuck in a rut and spinning my wheels in my career. All that stress gave me a desire to retake control, and find a little more enjoyment in my life. We were up in Ohio playing shows last summer, and I wrote this one on my own in my hotel room. I knew right away that I wanted to record and put it out, so I got together with my producer Sal Oliveri, and ended up with this track!

How has the response from the fans/market been thus far?

[S.M] I never could have anticipated how crazy the world was about to get when we submitted this one for release back in February. Fortunately, it seems like a lot of my friends, listeners and family have needed a pick-me-up song like this. I think that it hits home particularly hard right now because it’s not a superficial “feel good” song. The spirit of it acknowledges the difficulty and complexity of life, while alternatively showing you a solution and a way to cope.  I’ve been really appreciative of the love that I’ve gotten on it, and excited to continue to extend its reach out to more listeners.

Being an artist, how have you adjusted to life under quarantine, how are you making it work to your advantage?

[S.M] Well we’re still keeping busy. Although I haven’t been able to play, the time off has given me some time to hone my musicianship a lot. We’ve always tried to focus on putting on a damn good show, but the gates finally open up and we’re allowed to play again, we’re really gonna be on top of our game. We’ve been writing new material, rehearsing, learning new rep, and trying to extend ourselves.

Outside of the new single, what else are you working on at this present moment that your followers can look forward to in the short period to come? (please provide particular details)

[S.M] Our next release is a song called “Charlotte Has You”, which releases on August 28th. Additionally, it looks like late July and early August is when we’ll have a chance to slowly start venturing back out on the road. We’ll have shows in east Tennessee (Ole Red - Gatlinburg) on July 29-30, and August 7-8 in Virginia (Sidewinders Saloon - Roanoke).

More importantly, I recently signed on to play keys for Big Loud artist Larry Fleet. Larry’s an absolutely phenomenal musician, and has got a really unique style blending country with old school soul and blues. It’s really soulful and fulfilling music to play, and I’m really thrilled to be a part of his band. The majority of my time this fall will be spent focusing on his project.

How has your journey in the industry been thus far, any memorable highlights/accolades to look back on?

[S.M] Like everyone experiences, there have been lots of ups and downs. What I can honestly say is that we’ve worked hard to earn all of our wins, and haven’t had much given to us. I think the first moment that I felt some real momentum was back in 2017 when we won an  iHeart sponsored Battle of the Bands in Charlotte, NC, which allowed us to play at Carolina Country Music Fest that summer. We played in an opening slot for Luke Combs, Billy Currington, and Darius Rucker. The feeling that we’d earned our spot on that billing completely through our own merit made it that much more special.

Would you mind sharing with us your immediate and long-term goals?

[S.M] My immediate goal is to hopefully get back on the road! Both with Larry, and my own band, we’ve put together some really killer live shows. Can’t wait to get the chance to share our work with everyone! Long term, I’m hoping to secure a publishing deal, and make a living writing and working with other artists.
